It is almost time to vote! Election day is coming up quickly. On Nov. 5, the presidential election will take place. Voting for our country’s president is a big deal so it is important to know the candidates running for it so you can make an educated decision. This is especially important for some of the school’s seniors who will be able to vote for the first time. You will have to be 18 years old or older to vote.
The Democratic Party
The Democratic Party nominee is the current Vice president, Kamala Harris. President Biden endorsed Harris after he dropped out over the summer. She is the first ever Asian-African American woman elected vice president of the United States (US). Before her time in office, she worked as a prosecutor. She was the attorney General of California from 2011-2017 and District Attorney of San Francisco from 2002-2011. This helped her to become a US senator in 2016. She ran for president in 2020 but dropped her campaign to join forces with Joe Biden as his Vice President. Her agenda and beliefs align much more with the modern liberal movement. Harris is focusing on issues like cost of living, guarding fundamental freedoms, ensuring safety and justice for all, and keeping America safe. She plans to grow small businesses, cut taxes for middle class families, and continue to support small businesses and innovation. She believes in bringing back abortion and protecting civil rights and freedoms, along with tackling the drug crisis and securing the border.
Her running mate is Tim Walz who is the current governor of Minnesota. Walz is a former member of the Army National Guard who enlisted at 17 years old. After his seven-year tenure in the National Guard, he became a teacher in China through Harvard University. When he returned home from China, he taught high school. He then began a career in politics and was elected as a congressman. Walz is known for his relentless energy and strong ethics.
The Republican Party
The Republican Party nominee is former President Donald Trump. He served as the 45th US president, his term spanning from 2016-2020. President Trump lost re-election in 2020 against Joe Biden. Before entering politics, he was a well-known businessman and public figure. His family’s name is recognized by their Trump hotels and other business ventures. Earlier this year, there was an attempted assassination of the former president during a rally, which is not stopping him from campaigning. He is focused on issues like ending censorship, lowering the cost of health care, rejecting globalism, and rebuilding the economy. He wants to pick up where he left off on slashing job-killing regulations and decreasing the cost and competitiveness of the healthcare market. Both Trump and Harris agree on many issues, such as abortion and securing the border. Trump will have, who is an Ohio senator, as his vice president. In 2002, he enlisted in the US marine corp and fought in Iraq. After serving his years for the marine corp he graduated from Yale law school and later he was elected to the US senate in 2022.
