The highly anticipated final season of the popular Swedish Netflix TV show “Young Royals” will be released on March 11, 2024. The final episode that ends the whole series was released on March 18, 2024. The first season was released on July 1, 2024, while the second was released on Nov. 1, 2022. The series takes place at a boarding school where the crown prince of Sweden falls in love with the scholarship kid, a phenomenal singer. The series discusses fame, consequences, and expectations in life, but love is the heart of the story, both familial and romantic. To summarize, the plot in season one is primarily about Wilhelm, the Swedish prince, and Simon, the financial aid kid, getting together and going through hardships leading them to break up. Season two ends with Wilhelm and Simon getting back together after seeing them both, especially Wilhelm, go through immense personal struggles following the aftermath of an intimate video of them getting leaked to the public. Season 3 revolves around the boys being in a relationship, but also dealing with the struggles of now being in the public eye.
Lisa Ambjorn, the head writer for the series, wrote an exceptional third season with some of the most heart-hitting lines. I cried, beamed at my screen, laughed, and experienced such a wide range of emotions. The last episode t she wrote was absolutely amazing and neatly tied up all the important character’s storylines while also making me experience an actual emotional rollercoaster. Some of the very hard-hitting lines include: “I never gave up on us, I gave up on the royal family” and “You were my revolution” (which references the song that played at the end of season one, “Revolution” by Elias).
The series was originally recorded in Swedish, but it has many dubs of it. The English dub for the series is actually so good, and the actors who play the characters in the original recording also voice the English dub. Amazingly, the dub is almost perfect, but watching it in its original language with subtitles hits harder.
The incredible actor Edvin Ryding plays Wilhelm. Ryding has so much control and perfectly portrays his character. For example, Edvin’s portrayal of Wilhelm’s anxiety is heart-wrenching. Edvin draws the audience into Wilhelm’s struggles with anxiety and makes the audience experience Wilhelm’s emotions as the prince goes through them. Edvin accurately portrays anxiety and has a wide range of his acting capabilities. Simon is played by Omar Rudberg, who is a famous Swedish-Venezuelan singer.
Along with being able to sing well, Omar did a great job, considering this was his first acting job. He has grown in his acting capabilities throughout the series and can act out a wide range of emotions that really touch your heart. Both actors also have incredible chemistry, making scenes feel more real and making connecting and feeling for the characters even easier.
(Warning: From here on out, there will be plot spoilers.)
The plot was wrapped up really neatly, and I will not spoil it too much. Even the side characters’ storylines got wrapped up. For instance, Frederika and Stella got together this season after hints were dropped previously. Also, the show did a great job of referencing events that happened earlier in the series to make the ending a true full circle moment. Another sweet callback moment is Sara (Simon’s sister) and Felice (Wilhelm’s close friend) reconciling and talking to each other at the place where they first became friends and a party where Simon and Wilhelm were able to freely talk to each other and escape from the struggles of their daily lives.
The only problem I have with this series is the lack of Simon’s music in this season and the absolute emotional wreck I became while watching the final season. In previous seasons, Simon’s music played more of a role, so we got to hear him singing more frequently (which is lovely because Omar Rudberg has a fantastic voice—highly recommend checking out all of his music, like his self-titled album “OMR”). I feel like Simon’s music didn’t get brought up that much until the final episode. Simon’s school song from season two is used as the school song anthem at the end of season three, which foreshadows a new beginning for the students. This is an incredibly full circle moment because the song was originally going to be played at a public event in season two. Still the royal government prevented it from being performed and made them stick with the traditional song.. Simon also made an incredibly gut-wrenching, emotional and loving song for Wilhelm that references their conversations from season one and other key moments throughout their relationship.
Speaking of callbacks earlier in the series, “Young Royals” always starts and ends with Wilhelm looking directly at the camera. It breaks the fourth wall and draws you more into his story. He had the same look into the camera at the very end of the show, making it even more special and a great way to conclude the series.
To say I felt every single emotion while watching this series would be an understatement, as this series is so amazing. However, there was a lot of breaking up and getting back together. I think some things in terms of their relationship were unnecessary, but it does show couples overcoming struggles, which could become a good thing.
The soundtrack, for all the seasons, is always great. It encouraged me to get into both smaller artists and Swedish artists because the music played is absolutely the best. They play “Arcade” in the background while Wilhelm and Simon are having a deep conversation, and then they play “Alice” by Rhys during an intimate meeting, which fits the scene’s vibe perfectly. The music perfectly fits the scene and helps better show the character’s emotions.
This show has become an obsession of mine ever since I started watching it. It is a good series because it encourages people to be themselves proudly and takes you through such an emotional and intimate journey. The actors were phenomenal. This show is and will probably remain one of my favorite series of all time (probably tied for first place in my head, if we are being honest). The characters have so much depth and are very relatable. In fact, I think that is the best thing about the series: how much you can connect with the characters. “Young Royals” has been watched for over 9.8 million hours and the series has a 94% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
